moment of inertia is used in beam design because
if any structure is loded either it is a tensile or compressive,regardless of that if y take any point in that loaded structure and a imaginary plane passing through that point there y find a stress both normal stressand tangential stress even though the structure is normally loaded
then the point y are taking if it is apart from the centroidal axis then moment will also present in the plane passing about that point so the stress indused due to the moment is called flexural stress so in order to calculate this we need to include the moment of inertia
