Presentation by Holmes Murphy Associates

It seems like everyone’s drafting their own contracts anymore. AIA contracts, EJCDC contracts are being replaced by client-drafted or even contractor drafted agreements – and they are increasingly more one-sided.  Engineers are being asked to sign contracts with unreasonable indemnity clauses and uninsurable risks. This presentation will look at the high-risk language that should raise a red flag and how you can negotiate a win-win contract.

12:00 pm - 1:30 pm Lunch

1:30 pm - 2:00 pm  Best of the Best - The Conceptor Project-
Converting Organic Waste into Liquid Gold, Stanley Consultants

2:00 pm - 3:15 pm Mapping the Digital Twin- MLS Mapping of Perry and Dubuque
Presentation by Jonathon Miranda & Ben Sullivan, Foth

From utility design to pavement condition indexing, signage or economic development, attendees will learn how MLS systems are being utilized to map cities, as well as the added benefits regarding data captured including how to share BIG Data among peers and clients.  Presenters will describe project backgrounds, processes, challenges, and overall experiences for two digital twin mapping projects.  From an arterial drive to a full city-level scan, details pertaining to collective speed, cloud based data sharing for Pavement Condition Indexing, existing topographic mapping and city-wide high fidelity 3D models will be discussed.

3:30 pm - 4:15 pm Lesson Learned and the Future of Working from Home or Transitioning to a Remote or Hybrid Firm

As the world prepares to emerge from the impact of COVID 19, some firms are rethinking the way they will work post pandemic, including having a much larger contingent of employees working from home on a more regular basis.  A panel of ACEC firms will discuss lessons learned and what to prepare for to ensure a successful transition to a new working environment. We will also review possible changes in office configurations, work from home technology and what to do to ensure internal and external collaboration strategies.

8:30 am - 12:00 pm From Technical Professional to Confident, Comfortable, and Capable Seller- Doer
Presentation by David Stone, bluStone Marketing

Over the past forty years or so the engineering profession has accomplished some incredible things - we’ve replaced slide rules with the most sophisticated analytical and predictive modeling tools. We’ve made plants, structures, and buildings smarter than the people who use them. Heck, we’re even 3D printing entire buildings now!

But there is one thing we’ve consistently failed to do. We have yet to find a way to successfully and predictably transform a talented technical professional into a confident, comfortable and capable business developer.

Why have we been so consistently bad at this? The reason we’ve failed so miserably at transitioning technical professionals into successful seller-doers is that we have completely misunderstood the nature of this transition.

You see, we’ve been working on the premise that it’s simply a new set of skills to be learned. No different than learning the next version of SketchUp or HEC-HMS. Watch this video, practice a little, and you’re good to go.

But that’s a completely and utterly misguided approach that is guaranteed to fail. Just like it has so often up till now.

The transition from technical professional to seller-doer doesn’t happen by learning a new skill. It comes from a significant shift of mindset, worldview, and priorities.

In this educational and paradigm-shifting program, you’ll learn:

• How to develop a growth path that is designed around each person’s personal strengths and weaknesses
• How a simple shift in mindset can completely change your business development success
• How to establish a “personal business development plan” that actually increases enthusiasm among seller-doers
• How to overcome all the normal obstacles to seller-doer success including lack of time, project responsibilities, and an aversion to being too ‘pushy’
• How to overcome the ‘hidden’ obstacles including comfort zone expansion, fear, and lack of self-confidence
• How to establish a tracking program that provides real time feedback and course correction

You didn’t become an engineer for the opportunity to sell. But here you are and the next phases of your career demand that you both embrace and excel in your role as a seller-doer.

You’ve crushed everything you’ve done so far. Now it’s time to crush this.
